Optimec Systems: Driving Innovation in Contact Lens Measurement with BetaDen Accelerate
Founded in 2020 by Benjamin Coldrick and Matthew Cleere, Optimec Systems Limited was born out of the closure of Malvern-based Optimec Limited.
Determined to continue developing cutting-edge measurement technology, the duo launched Optimec Systems, focusing on optical coherence tomography (OCT) for contact and intraocular lenses. This technology allows for non-destructive, highly precise lens measurement, setting Optimec apart from traditional methods in the industry.
By the time Optimec joined BetaDen Accelerate, they were in the process of developing a new product line but needed additional support to complete development and scale the business. The programme offered an opportunity to provide grant funding, business mentorship, and strategic guidance, all of which were crucial to their growth.
According to Benjamin Coldrick, the main attraction was the combination of funding and mentorship:
“The grant funding side of things was great because it aided our product development and marketing. But the main thing was the support from the mentors in helping us with our business strategy, sales, and investment readiness.”
Support from BetaDen
Optimec benefitted from a range of mentors throughout the programme, with key contributions from:
- DK Business Growth: Business strategy and identifying growth opportunities.
- We Are Alp: Marketing and customer profiling to refine sales strategies.
- Jerroms: Financial guidance and investment planning.
This mentorship proved invaluable, helping them bridge knowledge gaps and refine their business model.
“The best output was gaining the understanding of what we didn’t know about trying to grow the business and helping to fill in those gaps.”
Key Outcomes & Achievements
- Product Launch: Optimec installed the first prototype of their latest product, Iris, in early 2025 and is preparing for its official launch.
- Further Grant Funding: Secured £8,000 from Innovation Worcestershire to support software development and product certification.
- Team Growth: Hired a full-time production engineer/technician and engaged an experienced sales consultant.
- Business Expansion: While a planned acquisition didn’t materialise, Optimec has expanded its product capabilities, opening new sales opportunities.
The Future for Optimec
With their latest product nearing completion and plans to explore machine learning and AI integration, Optimec Systems is set for continued innovation and expansion. Their journey with BetaDen has provided a solid foundation for growth, and they are now focused on securing additional funding, strengthening their team, and expanding their market presence.
When asked about advice for entrepreneurs considering an accelerator, Benjamin’s response was clear:
“Get stuck in with as many mentors as you can because the advice they can give is invaluable.”
